# Remember Last Authentication Method for Windows MFA

Windows MFA now lets a community administrator control whether it remembers a user's last successful authentication method and offers it as the default the next time they sign in. Previously, users had to reselect their preferred method on every login, even when it never changed.

When the setting is enabled, the 1Kosmos Credential Provider pre-selects the method the user last authenticated with successfully. The user can still choose a different method at any time.

### Configuring the setting

1. Log in to your tenant as a community administrator.
2. Navigate to **Applications > Windows MFA > Settings**.
3. Go to the **Authentication Preferences** section and turn on the **Remember last authentication method** toggle.
4. Click **Save**.

### Behavior

* **When enabled** — users are defaulted to the authentication method they last signed in with successfully. They can still select a different method at any time.
* **When disabled (default)** — the Credential Provider does not remember or pre-select the last method, matching the existing behavior.

The setting is **off by default**, scoped per community, and takes effect on the Credential Provider's next configuration fetch — no service restart or redeployment is required.

**Notes**:

* The setting controls only whether the last successful method is pre-selected as the default. It does not change which methods are available to the user or how they authenticate.
* The 1Kosmos Credential Provider applies the default selection at login; the user can still pick any other enrolled method.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.1kosmos.com/authentication/windows-workstation-mfa/capabilities/remember-last-authentication-method-for-windows-mfa.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
